Shipment number 4 is on it's way!

Yesterday the 4th shipment of boxes went in the mail. There were seven in all. We sent candy, power bars, socks, batteries, crystal light,  and materials for writing home- paper, pens and envelopes.

Thanks for everyone for all your support in donating supplies and shipping costs. I think we are down to two packages before my brother's platoon comes home in August.

For the next package we are going to aim for body wash, sunscreen, and deodorant. We will need 50 of each.

Body Wash and Crystal Light Deals

I decided if I found great deals on things we needed to collect for the Marines I would post them here so we all can collect these items for free or cheap! This week I have two great deals.

Crystal Light- Target
There is a $1 off purchase of 3 Crystal Light products on the Target website which can be combined with a Buy 2 get 1 Free manufactures coupon in your 4/3 Smart Source insert from the newspaper

Gillette or Old Spice Body Wash- Rite Aid
In the 4/3 Proctor and Gamble coupon insert from the newspaper there are Buy one get one Free off both Gillette and Old Spice Body Wash. There is also a $1 off two Old Spice products that you can use. At RiteAid the body wash is $2.99 and if you have their wellness card you get $2 back to use on a future purchase thus making the body wash 99cents. However when combined with the coupons you can get 2 body washes for $2.99 plus you get $4 back to use on future purchases.
In the paper it says a limit of two per household so I am not sure if you can go through the line more than once but my sister was able to get 4 for just the cost of tax after using her cash back.

Let's see how many body washes we can collect to send to our Marines!

Package Three Shipping Out

We mailed off our third set off packages yesterday. Six boxes of body wash, razors, chapstick, deodorant, and treats are on their way to our Marines! Thanks again to everyone who continually donates to support our cause.

I got to talk to my brother last week and he sends a great big THANKS to all of you from his platoon. He said they are always grateful to see all the boxes and are loving the items inside. I asked him if there was anything specific they were wanting. Here is the list he gave me.
  • Sunscreen
  • Chapstick
  • Deodorant
  • Body Wash (He said they go through this faster than you would think)
  •  Gatorade or Propel to go packets
  • Tootsie rolls and Easy Mac were his two personal requests
These are the items we will aim to send in April. Thanks again for all your support.

Valentine Cards and Candy

My brother called my mom the other day to let her know he had returned safely from a convoy. In the midst of their conversation he also told her that all of his platoon had received Valentine's Day cards and candy from an elementary school class. He said to please thank whomever sent those. Turns out his finance's mother was behind that fun.

A little bragging- my brother passed his PFT (Physical Fitness Test) with flying colors. He ran his three miles in 20 minutes. He says his is surviving and sends his love and appreciation to everyone for the letters and the packages that arrive for him and his platoon. It makes life a little more pleasant. Thank you to everyone for all your support in our project.

We hope to get the next set of packages in the mail in two weeks. Items we are collecting for this month include:
  • Sunscreen
  • Crystal Light or Gatorade to go drink packets
  • Razors
  • Socks
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wet Wipes
Thanks again for all  your help.

Happy Birthday!!

It was my brother's birthday this week. Happy Birthday little brother. We sure wish he could be here to celebrate. On our birthday's my mom always gets us a chocolate chocolate donut for breakfast. I guess we will each have to eat one this week for him. We sent him a package, no chocolate donut, but lots of treats, razors for shaving, books, and letter writing supplies and calling cards so he can keep calling home.

My mom had the opportunity to talk to my brother on the phone the other day. He is doing well. He asked her to send cinnamon bears because several of his friends have never had a cinnamon bear. My mom thought that was pretty funny and is getting those cinnamon bears on their way. He also requested frooties. Now half of my family didn't even know what those were. They are mini fruit flavored tootsie roll type candies sold in bulk at Costco. My in-laws always have them on hand because my kids love them.

Our next 8 packages are due to be mailed out this weekend. They will be full of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, hand towels, chapstick, crystal light to go packages, nuts, and powerbars. Thanks to everyone who wonderfully donated supplies for us to send and money to help us mail these packages out. We've had a great deal of support to assist us in getting these packages out each month and making a difference in the lives of 50 Marines.

My coworker sent this video today. The body of the email said, " A good reminder of what our military personnel have to leave behind when they are deployed." This is a touching video and I am warning you now you will need your tissues. I used the remainder of the box on my desk, yes I cried at work!

Special Delivery

Our first shipment arrived in Afghanistan last week. My brother called my mom on Saturday and told her the packages we sent had arrived. He said his platoon was thrilled to receive all the "goodies". He asked my mom to please thank everyone for him and for his platoon. On behalf of my brother and his platoon Thank You ALL for your donations! Your thoughtfulness was greatly appreciated.

When they received the packages they had just returned from being out on convoy for five days. My brother said he didn't sleep the whole time. He was glad to be back to camp and it was a welcome surprise to have our boxes there waiting for everyone.

My brother reports they are all doing well but it is hard out there. He again asked for everyone to pray not only for him but also for his entire platoon. They need our prayers to make it through. He also said please keep those letters coming.

And it just keeps getting better.

I am so amazed by the generosity of people, especially when they don't even know those they might be serving.  One of my brothers works at Key Bank. He asked his boss for permission to solicit Marine donations from his fellow coworkers. His boss referred him to someone at the corporate office who is in charge of collecting donations to send packages to Key Bank employees family members who are serving our country. She said last year they collected 2 tons of supplies to send out. She said they are just getting ready to start their donations for this year. She said she would make sure my Marine brother received packages, I believe she said 4, and a care package when he returned home. She also said they make sure to send packages to those who are not receiving any support while they are out there. WOW! I think this is awesome. Thanks Key Bank employees.

My sister's relief society, the group that donated some of the stuff we sent out in our first round of packages, sent letters to every Marine in my brother's platoon. Fifty letters went to Afghanistan this week. Below are photos of her ward putting together the supplies for the packages.

We will be sending our "Make a Marine Your Valentine" package around Feb 18th. We hope to include
  • Travel size toothpaste, shampoo or body wash (thanks to all my coworkers who donated their St George hotel goodies!)
  • Envelopes and pens
  • Sunscreen
  • Razors
  • Candy or gum
  • Visine
  • Crystal Light or Gatorade to go packets
  • Lots of letters
Thanks again to everyone for all your support! Let's keep those packages going out!

Why am I blogging?

My little brother and his platoon deployed for Afghanistan two weeks ago. Before he left he said the only thing that is going to get us through this is lots of prayers, letters and packages. He asked us to send packages to his platoon of fifty marines. As he is over fighting for the freedoms we probably take for granted on a regular basis, my family decide we would take on the challenge to send a package to fifty marines each month they are deployed.
I am creating this blog to keep everyone up to date on how my brother is, how the package collections and mailings are going, and hopefully to recruit donations of supplies to send to the troops!

We sent our first package, or I should say packages- there were 7 large flat rate shipping boxes, off last Saturday. Yep- seven boxes full of socks, crystal light to go, power bars, Kleenex, Chapstick, sunscreen, gum, candy, hand sanitizer, and pens are all on there way to Afghanistan. From the sounds of it, these will be well received as this platoon had a "rough" day today!

I want to say a big THANK YOU to all who helped donate to the cause and assure our first packages went out. Goodies were donated by my coworkers and my sister's relief society including a last minute envelope of the needed amount of cash to mail ALL those boxes. That was truly a blessing in disguise.

This month we are theme our campaign- "Make a Marine Your Valentine" So if anyone wants to donate the following items or Valentine's cards these will go out to our Marines during the month of February.
  • Travel size toothpaste, shampoo or body wash
  • Envelopes and paper
  • sunscreen
  • candy or gum
  • crystal light or gatorade to go packets
  • razors
  • Visine
I have also included the links to donate to care packages sent out by marineparents.com or to purchase a calling card and send it.
