Happy Birthday!!

It was my brother's birthday this week. Happy Birthday little brother. We sure wish he could be here to celebrate. On our birthday's my mom always gets us a chocolate chocolate donut for breakfast. I guess we will each have to eat one this week for him. We sent him a package, no chocolate donut, but lots of treats, razors for shaving, books, and letter writing supplies and calling cards so he can keep calling home.

My mom had the opportunity to talk to my brother on the phone the other day. He is doing well. He asked her to send cinnamon bears because several of his friends have never had a cinnamon bear. My mom thought that was pretty funny and is getting those cinnamon bears on their way. He also requested frooties. Now half of my family didn't even know what those were. They are mini fruit flavored tootsie roll type candies sold in bulk at Costco. My in-laws always have them on hand because my kids love them.

Our next 8 packages are due to be mailed out this weekend. They will be full of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, hand towels, chapstick, crystal light to go packages, nuts, and powerbars. Thanks to everyone who wonderfully donated supplies for us to send and money to help us mail these packages out. We've had a great deal of support to assist us in getting these packages out each month and making a difference in the lives of 50 Marines.

My coworker sent this video today. The body of the email said, " A good reminder of what our military personnel have to leave behind when they are deployed." This is a touching video and I am warning you now you will need your tissues. I used the remainder of the box on my desk, yes I cried at work!

Special Delivery

Our first shipment arrived in Afghanistan last week. My brother called my mom on Saturday and told her the packages we sent had arrived. He said his platoon was thrilled to receive all the "goodies". He asked my mom to please thank everyone for him and for his platoon. On behalf of my brother and his platoon Thank You ALL for your donations! Your thoughtfulness was greatly appreciated.

When they received the packages they had just returned from being out on convoy for five days. My brother said he didn't sleep the whole time. He was glad to be back to camp and it was a welcome surprise to have our boxes there waiting for everyone.

My brother reports they are all doing well but it is hard out there. He again asked for everyone to pray not only for him but also for his entire platoon. They need our prayers to make it through. He also said please keep those letters coming.

And it just keeps getting better.

I am so amazed by the generosity of people, especially when they don't even know those they might be serving.  One of my brothers works at Key Bank. He asked his boss for permission to solicit Marine donations from his fellow coworkers. His boss referred him to someone at the corporate office who is in charge of collecting donations to send packages to Key Bank employees family members who are serving our country. She said last year they collected 2 tons of supplies to send out. She said they are just getting ready to start their donations for this year. She said she would make sure my Marine brother received packages, I believe she said 4, and a care package when he returned home. She also said they make sure to send packages to those who are not receiving any support while they are out there. WOW! I think this is awesome. Thanks Key Bank employees.

My sister's relief society, the group that donated some of the stuff we sent out in our first round of packages, sent letters to every Marine in my brother's platoon. Fifty letters went to Afghanistan this week. Below are photos of her ward putting together the supplies for the packages.

We will be sending our "Make a Marine Your Valentine" package around Feb 18th. We hope to include
  • Travel size toothpaste, shampoo or body wash (thanks to all my coworkers who donated their St George hotel goodies!)
  • Envelopes and pens
  • Sunscreen
  • Razors
  • Candy or gum
  • Visine
  • Crystal Light or Gatorade to go packets
  • Lots of letters
Thanks again to everyone for all your support! Let's keep those packages going out!
